Derek's Story

 

Derek Shiver is my forty year old brother. He is married with three small children is a truck driver by trade and just finally found a new job!!!! He was working at home around the house hammering and a nail bounced back at full force going directly into his left eye draining all the vitreous fluid and shattering his left eye. Doctors have told him he will never see again in that eye. He has no health insurance and can not work until he totally recovers from multiple surgeries. Just last week he was scheduled to have a major surgery but the surgeon postponed the surgery because he did not have the $10,000 to pay for the surgery but also told him that he needs the surgery because it will start to affect vision in his right eye that he has 20/20 vision in and if too much time passes he could end up blind in both eyes. WOW.  

Many doctors have been wonderful and generous with their time and resources. The Thomasville Eye Surgery Center has been AMAZING. My family certainly is grateful to so many people. The Lions Club is saying that he has been approved for some funding and again we are so humbly grateful. God is so good!

However, there are so many needs he has like medications, living expenses, travel expenses..... and the lists goes on and on..... at this point, he needs 2 major eye surgeries and 2 more minor eye surgeries. He already has  accrued over $10,000 in medical bills and expenses. 

For those of you that know my brother, know that he is funny, entertaining and the life of the party. You also know that he had a very difficult first 35 years of his life. The last 5 years of his life he has made an amazing transformation. He is a great father to identitcal twin girls (5) and a 2 1/2 year old boy.  When the accident first happened the very next day he said to me, " I am seeing ( with my good eye) my almost three year old little boy run through the corn I planted. I would say I am blessed more than I deserve."  I was so touched by that courage knowing what he has been through in his life. He could be bitter and say WHY ME? Yet,  Not ONCE has he said such a thing!  I knew that day that I would use all of my contacts and resources to help him!
